Why it matters to spot bedbugs early
Bedbugs breed fast: one female lays several eggs a day. The earlier you notice the signs, the simpler and cheaper the treatment. A neglected infestation spreads through the whole apartment.
Bites — in lines, with morning itch
The main and most visible sign. Bedbugs bite at night, and bites often run in a chain or line of 3-5 spots on exposed skin — arms, neck, back, legs. The itch usually worsens towards morning. Reactions vary from large welts to barely visible dots.
Dark spots on mattress seams
Inspect the seams and folds of the mattress and the joints of the bed frame. Tiny dark brown-black dots are bedbug droppings. Sometimes small dark blood smears appear on the sheet. This is one of the most reliable signs.
Shed skins and eggs
Bedbugs moult as they grow, leaving semi-transparent light-brown shed skins. Eggs are tiny, whitish, about a millimetre, usually in cracks and seams. A build-up of shed skins indicates an established population.
Sweetish smell
With a large infestation a specific cloying, sweetish smell appears, often described as spoiled berries or almonds. If the smell is noticeable, the population is already significant.
Where to look for bedbugs
- Bed frame and headboard — joints, cracks, fixings.
- Mattress seams and folds, fabric labels.
- Baseboards and the wall-to-floor joint near the bed.
- Sockets and switches — bedbugs hide inside.
- Behind pictures, in furniture joints, under loose wallpaper.
Why you cannot delay
Bedbugs do not disappear on their own. While you wait, the population grows and moves into neighbouring rooms — and in an apartment block, to the neighbours. DIY products rarely clear an infestation fully. With confirmed signs, it is reasonable to contact a pest control service in Chișinău or Bălți right away.
