Are the substances safe for children and pets
This is the main question for parents and pet owners before treatment. The short answer: professional pest control in residential spaces uses low-hazard substances, and when the preparation, exposure, and ventilation rules are followed, it is safe. The risk comes not from the substance itself but from breaking the procedure.
Hazard classes of substances
Chemical substances are split into 4 hazard classes: class 1 — extremely hazardous, class 4 — low-hazard. In residential spaces, class 3-4 (moderate and low-hazard) substances are permitted. Class 1-2 substances are not used in apartments and houses. A good service names the hazard class on request and shows the safety data sheet.
Pyrethroid-based products
Most modern household insecticides are pyrethroid-based (synthetic analogues of natural pyrethrum). They are effective against insects in small doses and break down relatively quickly. That is why they are used in residential spaces and institutions — at the correct dosage.
How to protect children
- During treatment and exposure, the child must be out of the apartment.
- Put toys, especially those put in the mouth, in cabinets or pack them away.
- Isolate children's dishes and bottles, and wash them after treatment.
- Return with the child only after ventilation and wet-cleaning of contact surfaces.
How to protect animals
- Take cats, dogs, rodents, and birds out together with cages and carriers.
- Remove or pack away bowls, beds, and food.
- Bring pets back at the same time as people, after ventilation and cleaning.
- Be especially careful with products in zones the animal can reach.
Aquarium and fish
Fish are especially sensitive to insecticides. Cover the aquarium tightly and always switch off the compressor during treatment and ventilation, or it will draw particles into the water. Turn aeration back on only after the room is fully ventilated.
Ventilation and wet cleaning
After treatment the apartment is ventilated (usually 2-4 hours), then wet-cleaned on only the surfaces that people and animals contact: tables, chairs, handles, windowsills, floors in walkways. Baseboards, corners, and areas behind furniture are not washed.
When it is safe to return
You can return once the exposure has been observed, the room has been ventilated, and contact surfaces have been cleaned — the exact time is named by the service. If the family includes allergy sufferers, pregnant women, or very young children, say so in advance: the service will select a suitable substance.
